Middlemist Hat Pattern – The No Cabling Cabled Hat
Middlemist is my second of free patterns that I am so happy to offer. This is a quick and easy knit- perfect for gift giving. Although the hat appears to be cabled, it is not. If you know how to knit and purl and knit in the round, you can knit this hat!

MATERIALS & INFO Yarn: Worsted: 58g/180 yds of any worsted weight yarn DK: 54g/240yds of any DK weight yarn For the Sand colored sample and Rust colored sample (photos at end of pattern) I used DK Superwash Merino from Pearl & Clover Yarn Co. Gauge : Worsted Weight: 18 stitches and 24 Rows in both rib and faux cable DK: 20 stitches and 28 rows in both rib and faux cable Needles Worsted Weight Version: US 8 (5mm) DK Verson US 7, (4.5mm) Notions 1 stitch marker, tapestry needle; Finished size: Worsed: 16” unstretched DK: 16” unstretched Both sizes easily stretching to 21”-23” | PATTERN NOTES Middlemist is a faux cabled hat that is beautiful to look at, easy and quick to knit up and warm and comfortable to wear. It makes a fabulous quick gift knit. Middlemist is beginner friendly, but interesting enough for the more advanced knitter No cable needle needed for this no cabled, cabled hat! Instructions are for worsted and (DK) weight yarns. Need the hat bigger or smaller? It’s simple; the pattern repeat is a multiple of 4. ABBREVIATIONS k– knit p– purl k2tog– knit the next 2 stitches together co– cast on bor-beginning of round fc (faux cable)- k2tog leaving both stitches on the left needle; with the right hand needle, knit into the 1st stitch on the left needle again and slip both stitches to right hand needle. PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
Pattern Starts Here:
Numbers in ( ) refer to DK weight yarn
CO 72 (96) st. Join to work in the round being careful not to twist stitches.
CO 72 (96) st. Place a BOR stitch marker and join to work in the round being careful not to twist stitches.
Ribbing:
Round 1: *K2, P1 repeat from * until end of round
Repeat round one until piece measures 4” from cast on edge.
Body Of Hat:
Set up Round : *P2, FC; repeat from * until end of round
Round 1: *P2, K2, P2, repeat from * until end of round;
Round 2: Repeat round 1
Round 3: Repeat round 1
Round 4: *P2,FC; repeat from * until end of round.
Repeat rounds 1-4 at total of 4 more times or until hat measures 7” from cast on. Keep in mind you want to end with a row 4, so if need be, you can either stop earlier than 7 inches or go a bit longer.
Crown Decreasing:
Round 1:*P2tog k2; repeat from * until end of round – 54 (72) stitches
Round 2: *P1, K2; repeat from * until end of round
Round 3: *P1, K2; repeat from * until end of round
Round 4: *P1; FC; repeat from * until end of round
Round 5: *P1, K2, P1, K2tog; repeat from * until end of round 45 (60) stitches
Round 6: *P1, K2, P1, K1; repeat from *until end of round
Round 7: Repeat round 6;
Round 8: *P1, FC; P1, K1; repeat from * until end of round
Round 9: *P1, K2, P1, K1; repeat from * until end of round
Round 10: Repeat round 9
Round 11: Repeat round 9
Round 12: *P1, K2tog, P1, K1; repeat from * to last 4 stitches; K2tog, P1, K1 36 (48) stitches
Round 13: *P1, K1; repeat from * until end of round.
If working in worsted weight continue to the Finishing Worsted Weight Version Instructions. If working in DK – skip down to round14
Finishing Worsted Weight Version:
Cut yarn leaving a 6” tail.
Thread tail through a darning needle, sew tail through all remaining stitches. Secure with a few stitches on the wrong side of the crown.
DK Version:
Round 14: Repeat round 13;
Round 15: * Slip 1st and 2nd stitches as if to knit; purl next stitch; slip first two slipped stitches over and off the needle then k1,p1,1,. Repeat from * around; 32 stitches.
Finishing DK Version:
Cut yarn leaving a 6” tail.
Thread tail through a darning needle, sew tail through all remaining stitches. Secure with a few stitches on the wrong side of the crown.
